A hog is a domesticated pig that keeps use of something for oneself in a selfish way. In the book, A Lesson Before Dying, Jefferson is called a "hog" by the defense attorney. The defense attorney is not trying to be mean or unfair, he is actually trying to defend Jefferson by saying a man can not do such a crime so he could not be sent to the electric chair being a hog. It backfired because Miss Emma believed the defense attorney was trying to say he is a hog and not a man, therefore she would like for the teacher Grant Wiggins to make him into a man. It affected Jefferson, Miss Emma, and Tante Lou so deeply because Miss Emma is his godmother and they are trying their best to see him. Jefferson suggests that Miss Emma makes corn for Jefferson because he wants some corn, but Miss Emma will not bring corn to Jefferson because hogs eat corn.
